Bachelor of Science In Biochemistry

"Our Biochemistry degree is truly interdisciplinary and prepares our students to delve into both the cellular and chemical interactions that are essential for life on Earth," says Nikolas Stasulli, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology & environmental science and biochemistry program coordinator.

Position Yourself at the Intersection of Two Great Sciences

Biochemistry is where chemical processes merge with biological functions and systems. It’s the fascinating area of study where scientists focus on the biochemical reactions that happen at the molecular level in living things.

Biochemical research is an integral part of many fields, and discoveries in biochemistry have improved — and continue to improve — the quality of our lives. From contributions to the field of medicine — including in cell biology, pharmacology, immunology, nutrition, cancer research, and forensic medicine — to its applications in industry and food production, biochemistry is demonstrating an ever-widening range of impact, opening up exciting new opportunities for future biochemists.

Our Program Gives You All the Elements for Success

To prepare you for this highly collaborative field, the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ’s B.S. in Biochemistry program integrates courses in biology and chemistry to give you a holistic view of how chemical interactions influence biological systems. The knowledge you gain in the classroom will be put to work in hands-on laboratory courses, where you will develop your proficiency in conducting scientific experiments using our high-tech instrumentation to analyze and evaluate experimental results.

In addition:

  • You will have the unique opportunity to perform mentored research with faculty from both the Biology and Chemistry programs, adding depth to your research experience, which will impress future employers.
  • Because biochemists — like everyone else— must possess the soft skill of effective communication, you will develop the ability to critically assess and effectively communicate your knowledge of biology, chemistry, and experimental results both orally and in writing.
  • You will develop proficiency in the use and critical evaluation of scientific literature and biological and/or chemical databases.
The Professional Bonds That Make the Program Even Stronger

The University of New 51¶ºÄÌ has established professional connections in both industry and academia. These strong links bring significant advantages — both pre- and post-graduation — to students in our Biochemistry program. Our network includes local and state organizations and companies, the BioCT network of biotech companies, Yale University, UCONN, Alexion, Arvinas, and other high-profile entities.

The Doors This Degree Will Open

Biochemist, biological technician, physician assistant, medical scientist, and environmental scientist are some of the careers that will be open to you with this degree. The Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that all of the above careers expect a growth rate of between 6% and 31% through 2028.

Other students will choose to go on to graduate school. Our B.S. in Biochemistry is a superb foundation for master’s- and doctoral-level programs in many biological, biomedical, and chemical sciences, where lab experience is a great advantage in successfully completing an advanced degree.

Students pursuing this rigorous degree program are also excellent candidates for our Pre-Medical Studies designation if their goal is to earn an M.D. or D.O. degree in medical school or if they want to practice in fields such as radiology or neurology, where knowledge of chemical interactions is essential.

Selected Courses and Programs
  • This course examines the biochemistry of nucleic acids, their function as genetic information and control over the expression of that information, nucleic acid-protein interactions. Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills though reading and evaluating primary papers and working on experimental design.

  • This course is an organic chemist’s view of biochemistry, emphasizing a structural and mechanistic approach to the chemistry of life.

  • This course provides an in-depth examination of the relationship between protein structure and function. Students will become acquainted with key elements of critical thinking and problem-solving methods and techniques by using primary literature, group discussions, and the protein data bank as well as other resources for exploring protein structure.
