Master of Science In Civil Engineering

The University of New 51¶ºÄÌ’s master degree program in civil engineering is uniquely designed for individuals with a keen interest in civil, environmental, and construction engineering and sustainability who want to improve their core competencies in analysis and design, areas that are critical for multifaceted civil engineering projects of the future.

A future of opportunity

Civil engineering positions account for the most jobs of any engineering field, and this job growth is predicted to continue. In Connecticut alone, job openings for civil and environmental engineers are expected to grow by 13.8 percent through 2022, which is higher than the aggregate rate of growth for all occupations in the state.

Federal funding for sustainable and "green" development has also led to an increase in environmentallyfriendly infrastructure projects, which has driven demand for civil and environmental engineers.

Our graduates will be prepared to work for Departments of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, the EPA, or consulting and engineering firms as a:
  • Civil engineer
  • Environmental engineer
  • Project leader
  • Structural engineer
  • Research Consultant
  • City engineer
  • Design engineer
  • Water engineer
  • Green building professional
  • Urban planner
Innovative focus areas

Students will choose courses from four innovative focus areas:

  • Sustainability
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Construction Management

Learn from professors who are dedicated to your success.

Our faculty are leaders and innovators in their fields, bringing both deep professional experience and academic rigor to the classroom.

Selected Courses and Programs
  • This course integrates theories and knowledge from structural analysis, civil engineering materials, and structural design courses into practical design solutions for basic building and bridge structures.

  • Skills of project management from other fields outside of construction are brought in to provide a well-rounded knowledge of management processes. Advanced topics of construction project management will be brought to the forefront in this course to increase the student's knowledge of advanced concepts including estimating, cash flows, cost control, materials management, and safety related topics.

  • Team project-based course geared toward developing entrepreneurial businesses related to civil and environmental engineering in a seminar format. With support of industry mentors, students are guided through the process of identifying opportunities, developing business plans, and determining funding sources. The class culminates with presentations to industry experts and venture capitalists to mimic typical investor pitches. The goal is to provide students with the knowledge and network to realize their business idea.

  • The main focus of the course is on the United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building rating system. Alternative materials and technologies used in green building construction are evaluated to make a case for materials selection for specific urban infrastructure projects considering the material's benefits, performance over time, and life cycle impacts. The course reviews the contents of the U.S. Green Building Council professional accreditation exam.

  • This course provides an overview of the concept of sustainability, including changing attitudes and values toward technology and the environment in recent times. Topics include models for population growth and urbanization trends, energy resources, global food production, global water resources, the built environment, and basics of quantifying sustainability with tools for sustainable engineering.

  • The University of New 51¶ºÄÌ offers a wide variety of in-depth courses that create a transformational educational experience for our students. To view the complete list of courses you'll take while pursuing a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering, check out the Academic Catalog:

Licensure and Certification Information

Generally, one of the requirements to become a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) includes a having an earned undergraduate degree from an ABET-accredited program. Please note that as a ³¾²¹²õ³Ù±ð°ù’s-±ô±ð±¹±ð±ô program this is not designed to, and is not sufficient to, meet the educational requirements for PE licensure. Individuals with non-engineering undergraduate degrees, degrees in disciplines outside of engineering, or international undergraduate degrees should contact the State where you intend to seek licensure to learn more about the PE licensing requirements. While you are able to submit your education credentials to NCEES for review, there is no guarantee that the M.S. degree will qualify you to be able to take the FE exam, the first step toward engineering licensure.

The University’s M.S. Civil Engineering program

  • Our curriculum does not meet the educational requirements for PE licensure in AL, AS, AK, AZ, AR, CA, CT, CO, DE, DC, FL, GA, GU, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, MP, MT, NE, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NY, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, PR, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, VI, WA, WV, WI, and WY.

NOTE: If you have an earned bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited program, that earned degree could provide a pathway to the PE exam. The University offers six undergraduate engineering programs accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
