Mission of the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ's Greek Life Program

The mission of Greek Life at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ is to enhance the personal development of its members through involvement in social Greek-letter fraternities and sororities, in accordance with the mission of the university. Greek Life cultivates a community based upon academic and personal success, culture, friendship, history, and tradition. Greek Life is committed to the fulfillment of the following core values: personal growth, community engagement, brotherhood/sisterhood, scholarship and lifelong involvement. Through the values and standards that bind us to our respective organizations, Greek community, and university, we are committed to strengthening our membership through personal growth, scholarship, and service.

  • To challenge our organizations and members to live by the rituals and values of each organization;
  • To empower our organizations and members to reach their full potential by providing them with opportunities for academic achievement, personal growth, and co-curricular involvement;
  • To demonstrate involvement through community engagement, civic relations, service and philanthropic endeavors locally, nationally, and internationally;
  • To facilitate cultural awareness and diversity amongst all social Greek-letter organizations;
  • To provide an inter-fraternal family of caring brothers and sisters who accept and respect all, who strive for life-long unity.

Greek Life Organizations

Independent Greek Council

The Independent Greek Council (IGC) is the governing body for one sorority (Alpha Sigma Kappa) and two co-ed fraternities (Alpha Phi Omega, Kappa Kappa Psi) at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ that do not fall under national councils. The Independent Greek Council was founded Spring 2016.

Alpha Phi Omega (APO)

Alpha Phi Omega is a national coed service fraternity founded on the principles of leadership, friendship and service. It provides its members the opportunity to develop leadership skills as they volunteer on their campus, in their community, to the nation, and to the organization. Alpha Phi Omega was founded nationally at Lafayette College in 1925. They were re-chartered at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2015.

Their colors are Royal Blue and Old Gold. Their symbols are a Golden Eagle, Sturdy Oak, and a Diamond. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include Pie an APO and Nacho Average Fraternity.

Alpha Sigma Kappa (ASK)

Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies is a unique social sorority for women in STEM majors. Alpha Sigma Kappa accepts all women pursuing a degree that contains one-third of their major classes in any of the STEM fields. Their purpose is to promote friendship, fellowship, academic achievement, and unity among women in STEM, and philanthropy throughout the community.

Alpha Sigma Kappa was founded at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in 1989, after the female engineers were phased out of the Triangle Fraternity’s "Little Sisters of the Triangle" program. They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2016. Their colors are Royal Blue and Silver. Their symbols are the Infinity Symbol, Lioness, White Rose, and Blue Topaz. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include STEM Day Challenge in support of DonorsChoose.Org, People For Protein Food Drive, Girl Scouts Badge Day, and Women’s Week in support of the New Reach Women’s Shelter.

Kappa Kappa Psi (KKPsi)

Kappa Kappa Psi is a national honorary band fraternity which believes that service to the college or university band program fosters responsibility, loyalty, and leadership; that a spirit of brotherhood is enhanced by the participation in a band program; that music is a universal language and truly the greatest of the arts; and that through fraternal participation, each member will strive for the highest.

Kappa Kappa Psi was founded nationally at Oklahoma State University in 1919. They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2016. Their colors are Blue and White. Their symbol is the Red Carnation. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include Week of Music and Recognize your Privilege event.

Interfraternity Council

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the governing body for three collegiate men's fraternities (Sigma Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Kappa Gamma Rho) at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ. The Interfraternity Council at The University of New 51¶ºÄÌ set forth their Constitution and Bylaws in order to cause closer working relationships and coordination among its Member Fraternities and The University of New 51¶ºÄÌ, in accordance with the policies and standards established by the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). The Interfraternity Council was founded on campus in 2013.

Kappa Gamma Rho (KGR)

Kappa Gamma Rho is a local social fraternity which believes that brothers come before anything else. The goals of Kappa Gamma Rho include promoting goodwill in the surrounding community, enhancing Greek and student life on campus, and promoting equality, diversity, and unity through Greek Life.

They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 1997. Their colors are Red, Hunter Green, and Gold. Their symbol is the Buck. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include Say What! Karaoke and Watermelon Smash.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE)

Sigma Alpha Epsilon is a national social fraternity which believes in advancing the highest standards of friendship, scholarship, leadership and service for their members throughout life. Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded nationally at the University of Alabama in 1856. They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2011.

Their colors are Royal Purple and Old Gold. Their symbols are the Lion, Phoenix, and Fleur de Lis. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include the Powderpuff Tournament, Toy Drive, and the True Gentleman Week of Service.

Sigma Chi

Sigma Chi is a national social fraternity whose purpose is the cultivation, maintenance and accomplishment of the ideals of friendship, justice, and learning within its membership. Sigma Chi was founded nationally at Miami University in 1855. They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2009.

Their colors are Blue and Old Gold. Their symbol is the White Cross. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include Derby Days and Sig Suit.

Multicultural Greek Council

The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) is the governing body for four culturally based fraternities and sororities [Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. (NALFO); Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (NPHC); Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; and Corazones Unidos Siempre Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. (NALFO)] at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ.

Corazones Unidos Siempre Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc.

Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. is a sorority who prides themselves on independence, women empowerment, and their dedication to servicing the community. They are devoted to educating, elevating, and empowering all women. Their values are leadership, sisterhood, service, and character. Chi Upsilon Sigma Sorority, Inc. was founded at Rutgers University, New Brunswick in 1980. They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2018. Their colors are Red, Black, and Beige. Their symbol is the Almighty Owl. Their motto is "wisdom through education."

Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. (SIA)

Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. is a national social sorority which believes in upholding the goals set forth by their thirteen founding mothers which is to formalize, cultivate, and foster bonds amongst each other as sisters and abide by respect, trust, communication, professionalism, and accountability. Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. was founded nationally at SUNY Albany, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY New Paltz, and Rensselear Polytechnic Institute in 1990.

They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2006. Their colors are Red, Gold, Royal Blue with a Black or White background. Their symbols are the Unicorn and Pegasus. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include the SIA Stroll Show, Pancake Delivery Night, Señor SIA, and Cultural Impact.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (Sigmas)

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is a national social fraternity which believes that the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma are the Fraternity’s most valuable resource and strength. They are the primary means by which the Phi Beta Sigma objectives will be achieved. In order to accomplish the Fraternity’s objectives, it is essential that systems are instituted that effectively embody "Culture For Service and Service For Humanity" and promote brotherhood, scholarship and service.

Phi Beta Sigma was founded nationally at Howard University in 1914. They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2011. Their colors are Royal Blue and Pure White. Their symbol is the Dove. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include the Breast Cancer Wristband Sale, Pie a Sigma, and the Small Business Expo.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

National Panhellenic Council

The Panhellenic Council is the governing body for the three Panhellenic chapters (Delta Phi Epsilon, Phi Sigma Sigma, Alpha Sigma Alpha) and one associate chapter (Chi Kappa Rho) at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ. The object of the Panhellenic Association shall be to develop and maintain women’s fraternity life and interfraternity relations at a high level of accomplishment. National Panhellenic Council was founded on campus in 2013. The national philanthropy of National Panhellenic Council is JDRF.

Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA)

Alpha Sigma Alpha is a national social sorority whose purpose is to foster close friendships between members and to develop women of poise and purpose. Alpha Sigma Alpha was founded nationally at Longwood University in 1901. They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2016. Their colors are Crimson, Pearl White, Palm Green, and Gold.

Their symbols are the Phoenix, Crown, Palm Tree, and Star. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include Nuggs from Ladybugs, Give A Ladybug Her Spots, and Alpha Olympics.

Chi Kappa Rho (XKP)

Chi Kappa Rho is a local social sorority that believes in promoting better understanding and friendship among the women at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ. Chi Kappa Rho was founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 1963. Their colors are Navy Blue and White.

Their symbols are the Diamond and the Rose. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include the SASS Walk, Virginia M. Parker Fashion Show, and March MADDness.

Delta Phi Epsilon (DPhiE)

Delta Phi Epsilon is a national social sorority whose purpose is to provide a sisterhood experience rich with tradition, innovation, and opportunities for growth. Delta Phi Epsilon was founded nationally at NYU School of Law in 1917. They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2007. Their colors are Royal Purple and Pure Gold.

Their symbols are the Unicorn, Pearl, and the Lovely Purple Iris. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include Deepher Dude and Flawless Fest.

Phi Sigma Sigma (Phi Sig)

Phi Sigma Sigma is a national social sorority whose purpose is to inspire the personal development of each sister and perpetuate the advancement of womanhood. Phi Sigma Sigma was founded nationally at Hunter College in 1913. They were founded at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ in 2007. Their colors are King Blue and Gold.

Their symbols are the Sphinx, Sapphire, and the American Beauty Rose. Some events they host at the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ include Winter Wonderland, Inferno, Lemonade for Literacy, and Eat Like a Pig with Phi Sig.
