In a message to the University community, Interim President Sheahon Zenger, Ph.D., encouraged Chargers to embody the values and ideals of Dr. King by speaking out, being advocates, and serving others.
January 15, 2024
Dear Members of the Charger Community,
Today, we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the impact of his commitment to advocating for equality and justice for all. Let us use this day – and the days to come – for reflection and in service to others.
As a University community, we have made it a priority each year to reflect on the life and the enduring legacy of Dr. King. Our annual MLK Celebration provides a weeklong series of events and programs that foster community and conversation and opportunities to volunteer, give back, and advance Dr. King's history of activism.
This year’s theme is "EmPOWERing Democracy: Embodying Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's Vision." Programs, events, and opportunities will begin on Thursday, January 18, and continue through our culminating celebration on Wednesday, January 24, when we will gather as a community to honor several individuals who truly embody the ideals of Dr. King by making a difference on our campus and in the communities in which we live.
Dr. King once said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." Speak out, be advocates, and serve others. In doing so, we will enrich our hearts and minds – and empower others. Ultimately, there can be no greater calling.
Sincerely,
Sheahon Zenger, Ph.D.
Interim President
