Over the course of the academy, students will be immersed in marine and environmental science, social science, and coastal resilience through hands-on research and policy discussions. Through fieldwork, lab work and engagement around New 51¶ºÄÌ Harbor, students will gain a deeper understanding of marine systems, coastal policy, and food provisioning from the ocean. Students will explore how climate change impacts coastal communities, study local marine ecosystems, and investigate sustainable solutions for shoreline management. Finally, the academy will also include career exploration and college preparation.

Our time during the academy will be spent exploring the diverse coastal systems around New 51¶ºÄÌ Harbor, as well as indoors recreating important coastal processes, such as coastal erosion, and exploring ways to create a resilient coastal ecosystem for all organisms (including humans!). Participants will create and present a small research poster on a topic related to expanding their blue horizon.

Students will participate in various activities, including:

• Hands-on experiences in various coastal ecosystems.
• Engage in lab exercises to study coastal organisms and processes.
• Connect with community organizations and the work done to build a resilient coastline.
• Attend a workshop on college applications and receive advice on careers in the marine and environmental field.
• Present results of a small project related to the week’s activities during a participants’ led conference at the end of the Academy.

Students must be completing a grade, 9-12th, in the 2025-26 academic year. Participants will need long pants and closed-toe shoes for some lab components of this program.
