Philip H. Bartels '11 Hon.
Philip Bartels joined the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ’s Board of Governors in 2001, and has served as its Vice Board Chair (2006-2012) and Board Chair (2012-2018), and continues as a Member of the Board. He was a Member of the UNH’s prior 2003-2004 Presidential Search Committee.
Mr. Bartels is an Of Counsel Attorney at Shipman & Goodwin LLP’s Office in Stamford, CT, a large Connecticut law firm. His current, full-time law practice is primarily pro bono work for tax-exempt organizations, principally for universities, including the University of New 51¶ºÄÌ and Cornell University (Re: corporate governance, contracts and related work).
He was a Magistrate in the Criminal Division of the Connecticut Superior Court in Waterbury (1983-1985); and he served on the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut’s Conservation Commission (a land use regulatory agency) (Member, 1984-2000) (Chair, 1992-2000). He has also been serving as a Municipal Citations Hearing Officer for the Town of Greenwich since 2008.
Mr. Bartels graduated cum laude from Cornell University, B.A. 1971. He received his Law Degree from the University of Chicago, J.D. 1974; and he is a Member of the Bars of Connecticut (1974) and New York (1980).
He received an Honorary Doctorate from UNH in 2011. His Father was a Member of the UNH Board from 1978 to 2001; and his Son and Daughter-in-law received their respective Masters Degrees from UNH in 2015.
